Wairarapa "To Remain Autonomous" Vote
Wairarapa will keep its regional autonomy, following a decision to resist the proposed "super-city" style-link with Wellington. A decision as to how an autonomous Wairarapa will be linked to the Wellington is still to be made.
Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa councils have all voted to consult the public on the idea of a united Wairarapa council. Some 90% of the people surveyed didn't think the super-city was the way forward for Wairarapa.
The industry, needs and communities of Wairarapa and Wellington differ - we feel that Wairarapa's identity should remain as-is, with its councils representing its local community members!
